From Trolleys to Shuttles and Ships - Getting Around Lake Tahoe

To travel by road is an ideal means for commuting in Tahoe, but a car is not the only transportation option you have. The Tahoe Area Regional Transit (TART) public bus, which runs between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., is a great alternative. BlueGo offers a great bus service with fixed routes and the premium Door-to-Door and Flex Route shuttles with custom rides for those with specific travel requests. These chartered bus rides are great transportation since they pick you up from your where your accommodation is located.

If your choice of North Lake Tahoe accommodation is a hotel or ski resort, you will find many ski shuttles to take you around the North Tahoe area. Similarly, for the South Shore the casino shuttle services are very popular. But, if you really want to explore Lake Tahoe - rent bikes and hit the road, see it like the locals do!

During summers, tourists are often seen hanging ten at the Nifty Fifty trolleys that roll by every hour. The trolleys are a must ride if you want to capture spectacular views of the mountains and valleys from Donner Lake to North Star. With a cheap all day pass you can get on and off where ever you want with their continuous loop service.

Finally, you have the sightseeing tours and specialty cruises offered by Tahoe's classic ships the Tahoe Queen and M.S. Dixie II. During the ski season, Hornblower Cruises offer a ski shuttle package from the Ski Run Marina for skiers. You can get on from Harveys, Harrah's, Horizon, Caesars, Lakeside Inn and Holiday Inn Express taking you across the lake in the morning on the Meteor to Squaw Valley. The return ride is on the paddlewheeler Tahoe Queen for an after ski party!
